India's stellar batter and former captain, Virat Kohli, will return to the Ranji Trophy after 13 years. The right-hand batter has confirmed his participation in the domestic tournament, as phase two will start on January 23. Playing for Delhi against Railways, Kohli will play under Ayush Badoni, who is the current captain of the team.
Even keeper-batter Rishabh Pant will be playing in the Ranji game. It will surely be a privilege for the young batter, Badoni, to captain these two batters in the tournament. Surprisingly, Kohli played his last Ranji game back in November 2012, against Uttar Pradesh.
He batted in both innings, scoring 14 runs off 19 balls in the first and 43 runs off 65 balls in the second innings. In both innings, he was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He played under Virender Sehwag, who was the captain back then. There were other star players as well, including Gautam Gambhir and Ishant Sharma.
The modern-day legend, Virat Kohli, made his Ranji Trophy debut in 2006 and has played a total of 43 games for Delhi. He scored 1574 runs at an average of 50.77 in the tournament. His return is a positive thing for the player and the young teammates, who will get to learn a lot from the stalwart. After receiving criticisms regarding his form, Kohli is returning to his roots to prove to the world that he is willing to work on his game and himself.
Virat Kohli is a once in a lifetime cricketer: Sourav Ganguly
India's former BCCI President and cricketer Sourav Ganguly praised Virat Kohli for his brilliant performance throughout his career. He even went on to say that for him, Kohli is the greatest white-ball player. Until now, Kohli has hit 80 centuries and will be aiming to hit the 100 mark in the upcoming years.
"Virat Kohli is a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer, like Jhulan [Goswami] is, like Mithali [Raj] is. To score 80 hundreds in international cricket is incredible. To me, he is the greatest white-ball player the world has seen. But I was really surprised by the way he batted in Australia after the hundred in Perth. He struggled before that here [in India], but I thought after the hundred in Perth, it would be a big series for him," said Sourav Ganguly.
