Pakistan began their Champions Trophy with a loss to New Zealand by 60 runs. Fakhar Zaman who was drafted in as the opener found himself on the injured list. The 34-year-old hurt himself in the second ball of the match while attempting to slide and save a boundary. Once he saved the boundary, Zaman quickly wanted help from the medical team and didn’t come out to field.
Skipper Mohammad Rizwan was asked to comment on the extent of injuries suffered by the veteran batter. Rizwan replied, “Not sure yet, he hasn't got his result yet. He is in some pain.” It is certain that Fakhar Zaman will not be part of the game against India on Sunday which is to be played in Dubai.
Khushdil Shah was the top scorer for Pakistan with 69 runs while former skipper Babar Azam scored 64. Mitchell Santner and William O Rourke were the best bowlers for the visiting side with three wickets each. The second game from Group A will witness India take on Bangladesh on Thursday in Dubai.
Mohammad Rizwan laments after loss to New Zealand
Speaking after losing the match, Rizwan said, “hey made a good target, we didn't expect that. We were looking at something around 260. We tried our best and used all tactics, but they played well and put up a good target. We see the pitch conditions, earlier the pitch wasn't easy to bat but when Will Young and Latham got together batted it got easier.”
The Pakistani also accepted that his team made mistakes as they had done during the opening match of the Tri-series. “At the end, we made the same mistake like we did in Lahore and they made a good target. We didn't get a good start with the bat.” At one stage, Pakistan were scoring at just about two runs per over while chasing 321.
Rizwan ended by saying, “We lost the momentum twice - once while bowling in the death and then while batting in the powerplay. It is disappointing for us, we played it like a normal match. The match is gone now and hopefully we can do better in the rest.”
