The co-hosts and three times lower ranked team, USA stunned the last edition’s finalists Pakistan in their campaign opener in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The match ended in a nail-biting ‘tie’ thriller as Pakistan’s strike pacer Haris Rauf failed to defend the 15 runs in the last over of the second innings when the USA were chasing the target of 160 runs.
The USA managed to stun the men in green by defeating them in the nail-biting ‘super-over’ after the scores were tied as both the teams scored 159 runs each at the end of both the innings.
Speaking of the match, the hosts’ skipper Monank Patel won the toss and asked Babar Azam’s men to bat first. Batting first, the experienced batting attack of Pakistan looked struggling attack against the less experienced bowling lineup of the United States of America.
Pakistan managed to post a total of 159 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted 20 overs courtesy and 44 and 40 runs scored by skipper Babar Azam and all-rounder Shadab Khan. Thanks to the 23 runs off 16 balls scored by lower order batter Shaheen Afridi in the end to take Pakistan to a respectable total somehow.
Nosthush Kenjige scalped 3 wickets for USA in the first innings at the cost of 30 runs in his 4 overs, alongside 2 wickets picked by Saurabh Netravalkar. Besides these two, Ali Khan and Jasdeep Singh also bagged one wicket each for their side.
The USA pushed Pakistan away from winning with an amazing run-chase and a thrilling ‘super-over
While chasing the target, the USA skipper and opener, Monank Patel scored a crucial half-century off 38 balls, with 7 fours and a six. His knock was followed by 35 and 36 runs scored by Andries Gous and Aaron Jones. Nitish Kumar’s last ball helped the USA to take the match into the super-over after levelling the scores with Pakistan in the allotted 20 overs.
During the super-over, the veteran Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir came to bowl the super-over and conceded 18 runs, including a run-out. Later, Pakistan failed to chase down the 19-run target in the super-over and the USA won the super-over by 5 runs to register their second consecutive win in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
