Young batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal has been the best batter from India in the Test format in 2024. Sports.info got the opportunity to speak to Jwala Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal's coach, after his ward scored an imperious 161 during the second innings of the Perth Test.
Amidst all the applause that the youngster got deservedly, his emotional coach was beaming with pride in Mumbai. During his exclusive chat with Sport.info, Mr. Jwala Singh said, “It has become a habit to see Yashasvi playing well and proving me right. When I took him under my wings, he was just 12.”
It wasn’t an easy journey for the coach of the player whose journey mirrored each other. Yashasvi Jaiswal had to undergo a lot of issues and challenges before finding a mentor who decided to share the youngster’s dream.
Battling doubters and challengers -The real story of Jwala Singh and Yashasvi Jaiswal
While speaking to Sports.info Mr. Jwala Singh said, “There were lots of doubts and many people used to challenge my decision. And then when he started performing all over the world, I’m really happy and proud”. Mr. Jwala Singh also felt that the recent successes of Yashasvi Jaiswal have been a victory both had dreamt of together.
When asked if he saw the recent successes as a huge moment of his life and a reply to all the naysayers, Mr. Singh replied, “Of course, I see this as a part of my life, because when I came to Mumbai in 1995 from Gorakhpur with huge dreams of playing for the national side. It was a very difficult decision because I came from a very small town where there weren't many amenities available for cricket back in the day.”
Just like his future ward, when Jwala Singh was dreaming of becoming an India star, he had to battle the naysayers. Mr Singh went on to say, “I had belief in myself that I will make someone play for India and I am thankful to God that I got Yashasvi Jaiswal. I worked hard on him. Because his situation was very similar to mine. Our approaches were very similar.”
Mr. Jwala, during his exclusive chat with Sports.info, also said, “After 28 years of my career, and being with him (Yashasvi Jaiswal) for last ten years, I am really happy what I was trying and the reason for which I came to Mumbai. Yashasvi has proved me right and now I can proudly say I have achieved what I dreamt of and the journey will continue.”
