The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have reinforced the uncapped player rule for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Ahead of the mega auction, the Board has allowed a maximum of five capped and two uncapped retentions for each franchise.

However, each franchise can retain only six players in total. This meant that MS Dhoni could be a part of the IPL 2025 thanks to the policy. Talking about the rule, former India player Mohammad Kaif made an assumption, saying, 'Everyone knows the rule has been changed for Dhoni.'

While the Board wouldn't agree to it directly, several reports suggested that CSK asked the Board to bring back the uncapped player rule, which would allow them to retain Dhoni in the squad. However, the CSK Chairman dismissed the rumours, saying they made no such demands in front of BCCI.

"I believe the rule has been changed rightly. I believe if he is fit and playing well, why not, change the rule and let him play. Everyone knows the rule has been changed for Dhoni sahab, and why not, you will want to change the rule for a player like Dhoni," said Mohammad Kaif.

We might not even use it for MS Dhoni: CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan opened up the uncapped player rule and said that the franchise hasn't discussed anything with Dhoni yet. After having a discussion with the former CSK captain, a decision will be made. However, since the rule just came out, they need time to have an in-depth discussion with the management and current Ruturaj Gaikwad before making any serious decisions regarding the future of the team. Moreover, he also said that they might not consider Dhoni as an uncapped player and retain him.

"We are not sure at this stage. We might not even use it for MS Dhoni. It's still too early to comment on this because we haven't had discussions with him. Dhoni was in the US, and we haven't had discussions yet," said CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan.
