Kolkata Knight Riders won the first qualifier game of the Indian Premier League 2024 to reach the finals. Half-centuries by Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer meant that KKR had defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad with more than six overs left to play.

It was a one-sided game right from the start as Mitchell Starc created havoc with the ball even before the first powerplay could be over. SRH did try their level best to stage a fightback with the bat, but the Kolkata bowlers were just too good as they didn’t give an inch to the opposition.

This is the third time Kolkata Knight Riders have reached the finals and they have won the title on both occasions they played the final game of the IPL. Gautam Gambhir’s return to the team has paid huge dividends as the former KKR skipper has been an inspirational figure in the dugout.

Pat Cummins' decision to bat first after winning the toss didn’t come to fruition as his team lost four early wickets. Travis Head was bowled for a 2nd ball duck, while Abhishek Sharma perished for 3.

Rahul Tripathi then gave SRH a brief respite as he began to play some clever shots to keep the boundaries flowing. Starc changed the game once more as he dismissed Nitish Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed off successive balls.

There was a brief renaissance as Rahul Tripathi and Heinrich Klaasen added 65 runs for the 5th wicket. Once the stand was broken, the SRH batting crumbled, with only Pat Cummins with 30 runs helping his team to a decent total of 159.

Rahmanullah Gurbazm getting to bat for the first time this IPL, was aggressive right from the start in the run0chase. The Afghan batter more than made up for the loss of Phil Salt as he showed the same intent the England wicketkeeper and batter had shown.

Natarajan and Cummins got the wickets of Gurbaz for 23 and Narine for 21, but the two Iyers made sure they punished some lousy fielding from SRH. The two batters scored the fifties apiece to make sure that the win came even before the second timeout was taken.
