The England cricket team, led by Jos Buttler, will be itching to add the one title that is missing in their cabinet in the white-ball format. England has won the ODI World Cup once and the T20 World Cup twice. After exiting the 2015 ODI World Cup in the group stages, England turned their fortunes around and became the team to beat in the ODI and T20I formats.

The Three Lions played India in a three-match series where they were outclassed by the hosts. Jos Buttler and his side lost the series with a 3-0 margin but there were lots of positives to take away from the tournament. The likes of Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, and Liam Livingstone put their hands up and performed well with the bat in India.

One of the biggest names to watch out for with the bat during the coming tournament is Joe Root. The 34-year-old has been in blazing batting form across all formats and is being seen as the best batter in the world currently. Root, who made his comeback to the ODI side during the India tour, is on the cusp of becoming the leading run-getter for his side in the 50-over format.

Here is England’s SWOT analysis for Champions Trophy 2025

Strengths: One of strongest batting order in the tournament and great all-round talents

England has perhaps one of the strongest batting units in the entire tournament. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett will open the batting and their recent exploits in India wouldn’t have gone unnoticed. Harry Brook, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, and Liam Livingstone form a great middle to lower middle order. Yet another amazing quality this England team has is the depth as far as their all-rounders. Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, and Adil Rashid are not only great bowlers but can also score crucial runs with the bat.

Weakness: Just one specialist spinner in the ranks

The biggest flaw for England coming into the tournament is their lack of spinning options. Adil Rashid is the sole spinner in the side with Liam Livingstone and Joe Root as back-up options. Rashid was the best bowler for his side during the recent tour of India, where the veteran picked seven wickets from three games. Considering the conditions that are set to be available in Pakistan, it is a huge surprise England opted for just one frontline spin option.

Opportunities: Seamers to wreak havoc with the ball

Jofra Archer’s return to cricket has not only seen him pick wickets but also regain his pace and hostility with the ball. Some of the current Australian batters and the majority of players from Afghanistan do not enjoy hostile pace bowling. Mark Wood is another bowler who has been bowling above 150 KPH with ease. Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, and Saqib Mahmood also bowl with good speeds with the ability to use the slower ball at will in the death overs.

Threats: Being way too aggressive with the bat

One of the biggest mantra’s for England across formats is to play attacking cricket and take on the opposition. Ben Duckett and Phil Salt have scored freely in the first ten overs of the game. But the problem lays in the aggression as the English tend to lose quick wickets while looking to bat the opposition out of the game. The recent series in India showed the English batting order can collapse under sustained pressure if they aren’t let to score runs freely.
