India's former cricketer Aakash Chopra discussed about the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and their chances of qualification under new captain Shreyas Iyer in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). As Chopra pointed out, PBKS has an issue with maintaining their win rate in the league. Hence, the former player is interested to see the team's performance in the 18th season of the tournament.
"After winning a lot of hearts, their hearts break in the end for sure. So can they change that in Shreyas Iyer's captaincy? It's a big challenge. The other thing is the belief. If you start well, you get on a roll. However, what will they do if they don't get a good start and go on a losing streak? That is a question they will have to answer," said Aakash Chopra in his YouTube video.
Punjab Kings haven't won a single trophy in the IPL. Iyer was outstanding in the previous season as KKR's captain, so a lot of hope will be on him to lead the PBKS to their maiden IPL title. The league is set to start on March 22, with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Who apart from him?: Aakash Chopra
The former player also questioned the batting line-up of PBKS ahead of the IPL. They lack the presence of some prominent batters in the team. Except for Iyer, they have only uncapped batting specialists who may or may not perform in the tournament. Iyer will have to bring out the best from the players in the upcoming season.
"The Indian batting department seems slightly weak to me. When I try to make their XI, one option is to open with both uncapped Indians - not a great idea. Shreyas Iyer is your rockstar Indian batter, but who apart from him? Only Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh are seen," added Aakash Chopra.
