Cricket fans ridiculed and mocked Pakistan for failing to start the first Test match versus Bangladesh on time. Rawalpindi is playing host to both matches and there were overnight rains that had a huge effect on the outfield. This saw the toss getting delayed as the players waited for the match officials to have a look at the conditions.

What made the fans even more amazed was the fact that despite the sunny conditions, the ground wasn’t prepared in time. The match officials conducted a few checks but the outfield was still deemed unfit to play. This made the players take an early lunch as the ground authorities tried to work on the conditions.

There was some hope as the match officials finally found the conditions to be in perfect shape to play cricket. The toss was scheduled to take place at 2 PM local time and a total of 48 overs were to be bowled in the day. The play could be extended up to 6 PM local time with the Tea to be taken at 4:20 PM.

Bangladesh opt to bowl after winning the toss

Najmul Shanto won the toss and made no bones about the fact that he wanted to bowl first. Bangladesh are touring Pakistan despite all the turmoil that is happening back home which has seen their elected government fall.

Speaking at the toss, the Bangladeshi skipper said, “I like to bowl first. The wicket has moisture, so will help our seam bowlers. We have a very good combination of seam bowlers and all-rounders, we had a very good preparation. It is very important how we play this Test match. I'm very lucky and very thankful to our cricket board, I'm enjoying the captaincy. We have six batters, two all-rounders and three seamers.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan skipper Shan Masood said, “We were going to bowl first as well, we have never played in Pindi in August before. It has rained as well, but if we bat well, towards the end of the game with the cracks, it will be tough to bat."

The Pakistan skipper also said, "Test cricket is about picking 20 wickets and when we went to Australia that was one of our targets, our bowlers did well there and it's about continuing that momentum with 7 of 9 Tests at home and we would like to do that. We have been very clear, and we have communicated with players, which removes the uncertainty a bit. It's a proud moment, and privilege and nothing is guaranteed in sport and it's an exciting opportunity to push for a place in the WTC final.”
