The Afghanistan cricket team is set to face New Zealand in a historic one-off Test match starting Monday, 9th September 2024, in Greater Noida. However, the unpredictable weather may pose challenges, as rain has been a constant companion for Afghanistan since their arrival.

The team, led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, has struggled to practice consistently due to wet conditions, playing only three intra-squad matches, all affected by rain. While Afghanistan managed some pre-match training on Sunday, the visiting New Zealand squad, captained by Tim Southee, had their session disrupted by inclement weather.

This Test is significant not only because it marks the first-ever Test match between Afghanistan and New Zealand but also because it is Afghanistan’s first time hosting the Blackcaps for a Test. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has arranged top-tier accommodations near the venue to reduce travel time, yet the players have found themselves riding the team bus more often than training, as rain-soaked outfields have limited their opportunities.

Weather prediction for AFG vs NZ first Test

Looking ahead, the weather forecast for the match offers little respite. Monday, the opening day, is expected to remain cloudy, with temperatures ranging between 26°C and 32°C and a 10% chance of rain. The moderate humidity could make conditions uncomfortable for the players.

From Tuesday through Thursday, scattered thunderstorms are predicted, with temperatures peaking at 33°C. This could create a stop-start rhythm to the game, challenging both teams’ strategies. The final day of the Test, Friday, is expected to bring thundershowers, with the temperature dropping to a high of 29°C and a low of 24°C.

The weather, therefore, seems poised to play a significant role in this match, threatening to disrupt what could be an exciting contest between two dynamic teams. Afghanistan, hoping to further establish themselves in the Test format, will be eager for a full match, while New Zealand, known for their resilience, will also need to adapt to the unpredictable conditions.
