On Tuesday the Indian selectors sat down to announce the team to take part in the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma will be leading the side as a few big surprises came into effect once the final 15 members of the side were revealed.

Rinku Singh wasn’t named in the 15-man squad and could only find himself named in the reserves. Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill along with Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed too found themselves in the reserves for the mega event starting in a month. Rajasthan Royals duo Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal were given a re-call to the team on the back of their amazing showing during IPL 2024.

While everything has been going good during this season of IPL 2024, the Impact Player rule has faced a lot of criticism. The rule despite being revolutionary has the chances to make hamper the Indian team chances during the 2024 T20I World Cup.
Here are the top three reasons why the Impact Player rule could hamper India’s chances during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

3. Lengthy batting order during IPL 2024

This year IPL 2024 has seen scores above 250 being breached with ease. Punjab Kings in fact created history by becoming the team to chase the highest-ever score in T20 history. The Impact Player rule allows the teams to bat deeper with the designated finishers batting as low as number 8.

While this has created excitement for the viewers, there is a massive imbalance as far as the team is concerned. The Impact Player rule has made it easy for the teams batting to rely on a batter to come and do the job when the going gets tough in a tense situation.

2. Lack of chances for the all-rounders

Hardik Pandya will head into the T20 World Cup as the specialist all-rounder for the side. The beleaguered Mumbai Indians captain hasn’t had the greatest of IPL 2024 seasons and this could come to haunt him during the T20I World Cup 2024 campaign.

Shivam Dube is one of the best examples of how the impact player rule has affected the team balance. The 30-year-old has been in devastating form with the bat during the IPL 2024 season for CSK. It is with the ball that Dube hasn’t been able to show his wares as he is a more than useful medium pacer.

1. The curious case of Rinku Singh and Kolkata Knight Riders

Shreyas Iyer and his Kolkata Knight Riders may have been breaking records but it also broke the hopes of Rinku Singh. The 26-year-old was touted as a favourite for the Indian team at the start of the year for the T20 World Cup squad. It was felt that Rinku Singh would be the finisher that India needed during the mega event in 2024.

Instead, Rinku Singh has been named in the 4-member reserve team. The Impact player rule has virtually denied the young left-handed batter a chance to make it to the Indian team. With Venkatesh Iyer and Angkrish Raghuvanshi batting over Rinku Singh, the chance to impress the selectors was all but done and dusted. This also meant that a top-heavy KKR side was less reliant on Rinku Singh meaning his chances to bat were minimal.
