LA Lakers star Anthony Davis recently gave a direct and candid response when asked about his thoughts on the analytical approach of the team’s new head coach, JJ Redick. Known for being a savvy analyst during his broadcasting days, Redick has made it clear that data and analytics will play a significant role in his first season at the helm of the Lakers. However, Davis has made it equally clear that his focus remains on one thing—winning games.

In a media session following Redick’s statements, Davis was asked about his thoughts on the upcoming season and the heavy reliance on analytics. Without hesitation, the All-Star forward expressed indifference toward the numbers and categories that often dominate basketball conversations today. "I don't even know what some of that stuff means," Davis admitted. "It doesn't matter to me. What matters is if we have more points than the other team at the end of the game. That's all I care about."

For Davis, the game of basketball is still rooted in simplicity. While data has increasingly influenced decisions and strategies across the NBA, Davis prefers to keep his mind focused on the basics: executing on the court and securing victories. He elaborated further, stating that analytics have no bearing on his approach to the game: "These things that they come up with as far as analytics, these categories and stuff like that, it doesn’t even matter. It does not influence me whatsoever."

Will this create trouble for Redick?

Davis’ remarks highlight a divide that often exists between players and coaches when it comes to analytics. While JJ Redick will lean heavily on the data to guide his coaching decisions, Davis is not one to pore over stats. As he bluntly put it, "I don’t care about numbers, numbers don’t mean anything. You can average 50 and be in last place."

Though some fans might interpret Davis’ comments as dismissive, his words reflect his on-court mentality. For the eight-time All-Star, it’s not about tracking data but about delivering performances that lead to wins. And as long as the Lakers are chalking up victories, the numbers behind them don’t matter to Davis.

As the NBA season progresses, it will be intriguing to see how Redick’s data-driven philosophy meshes with Davis' no-nonsense, win-first mindset. For now, Davis has made his stance clear—analytics won’t dictate his game, only victories will."
