On October 2, the Minnesota Timberwolves acquired Donte DiVincenzo from the New York Knicks in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns. Rumors surfaced following the deal that DiVincenzo was unhappy with his possibly diminished role when the Knicks moved for Mikal Bridges on June 25, which prompted the Towns trade.

Before being selected in the NBA draft, Bridges and DiVincenzo were Villanova teammates who combined to win two titles. DiVincenzo chose to put a stop to the speculations surrounding his trade to Minnesota and he wasn't worried about reuniting with his old college teammate or a possible sixth-man role. "Take the Villanova s–t out of it," he said. "I was super excited because we have a very good player coming back to the team. There was never a conversation of my role was going to be diminished," as per Sportskeeda.

Following the Bridges trade, supporters were eager for the Nova-Knicks to reunite. But before the preseason games began, Towns was already the focus of the Knicks, meaning the former college teammates were unable to play a single game together. During the previous season, Donte DiVincenzo was a vital member of the team. At the Knicks, he averaged 15.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists during his finest season. Additionally, the two-way player made 40.1% of his attempts from beyond the arc, marking the first time in his career that he has made at least 40% of his shots from that distance.

During the postseason, the shooting guard even outperformed himself, averaging 17.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.6 assists. With 8.2 attempts per game and a 42.5% shooting percentage from outside the arc, DiVo was an even more effective shooter throughout the playoffs.

Donte DiVincenzo was taken aback by the move, but it didn't affect his treatment of the other Knicks players. Ultimately, all four of them played collegiately for the same Villanova squad. Ever since, they have established enduring bonds and a sense of brotherhood among themselves.
