The Denver Nuggets have solidified their future by signing star guard Jamal Murray to a four-year, $208 million max contract extension, as reported by multiple sources. This deal extends Murray’s time in Denver through the 2028-29 season, ensuring he will earn $244 million.

Previously set to enter free agency next offseason, the 27-year-old guard is now locked in as a key figure in the Nuggets’ long-term plans. Murray has established himself as the perfect complement to three-time MVP Nikola Jokić, playing a pivotal role in helping the Nuggets secure their first-ever NBA championship in 2023.

Since his return from a torn ACL that sidelined him for the 2021-22 season, Murray has regained his form, proving to be one of the NBA’s elite perimeter scorers. Last season, he averaged 21.2 points and 6.5 assists per game, with a career-high shooting percentage of 42.5% from beyond the arc. His overall career averages of 17.5 points and 4.5 assists per game over 469 appearances for the Denver Nuggets further highlight his consistency.

Jamal Murray continues to flourish in the postseason

Murray’s postseason performances have been even more remarkable. He boasts an average of 24.2 points per game in 65 playoff appearances and holds the distinction of having two 50-point playoff games. His ability to step up in crucial moments has made him indispensable to the Nuggets, especially alongside Jokić in the team's dynamic duo.

Despite the Nuggets’ offseason success in extending Murray, the team's front office has faced scrutiny for allowing key veteran players like Bruce Brown, Jeff Green, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to leave. Brown and Green, instrumental in the 2023 championship run, were not re-signed, while Caldwell-Pope joined the Orlando Magic in free agency.

With these departures, the team will need to lean more heavily on the synergy between Murray and Jokić, while also giving younger players like Christian Braun and Peyton Watson increased responsibilities moving forward. This extension signals the Nuggets’ commitment to building around their core while navigating the challenges of retaining key supporting pieces. As they look to defend their title, Murray's new deal ensures the team remains a contender for years to come.
