Oscar Piastri had a witty reaction to the dramatic crash involving Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz during the final laps of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which saw both drivers eliminated from the race. The incident capped off a tense weekend for the two, who had already exchanged track warnings earlier, and it provided an unexpected twist in the final moments of the race.
Both Perez and Sainz were at the centre of controversy throughout the weekend, receiving warnings for getting in each other’s way during practice sessions. On Friday, Carlos Sainz was penalized for blocking Perez during FP2, while on Saturday, Perez returned the favour, earning his warning for a similar offence.
The rivalry between the two drivers simmered throughout the race weekend, and tensions finally boiled over in the closing stages of the Grand Prix. On lap 50, as the drivers battled for a podium finish, the drama unfolded. Charles Leclerc, who had been holding second place but struggling with worn-out rear tyres, was being closely pursued by Perez.

Just as Perez attempted to pass the Ferrari driver, Sainz saw an opportunity to make his move, overtaking Perez. However, the Red Bull driver wasn’t ready to give up, fighting back to reclaim his position. As he drew alongside Sainz on the approach to Turn 3, the two collided at high speed, sending both cars crashing into the barriers.
The crash gave Oscar Piastri a well-deserved victory!
The crash prompted the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) to be deployed, effectively neutralizing the race. This allowed Piastri to comfortably cruise to his second career Grand Prix victory, with Leclerc securing second place.
In the cooldown room after the race, Piastri, sitting with George Russell, watched the replay of the crash. Both drivers were visibly shocked by the incident, audibly reacting with a collective “Ooohhhhh!” when they saw the replay. With his signature dry humour, Piastri commented on the crash, saying, “They have not been great friends this weekend. That’s the third time they’ve nearly, well… they finally finished the job.”
Piastri’s remark perfectly captured the intensity of the rivalry between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz, whose weekend-long skirmishes culminated in a spectacular crash. While their crash ended their race, it was Piastri’s sharp observation that left fans and fellow drivers amused at the absurdity of the situation.
