Kyle Larson’s pursuit of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series title took a serious hit after a brutal crash in the playoff opener at Atlanta Motor Speedway. As his fellow Hendrick Motorsports teammates Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott, and William Byron all secured top-10 finishes, Larson’s race ended early, derailing his playoff momentum.
The incident occurred on Lap 56, with Larson competing for the lead alongside Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric. Larson, driving his #5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, suddenly lost control while navigating Turn 1 and Turn 2.

Without warning, his car snapped loose, and as he attempted to regain control, the situation worsened. He overcorrected, sending his car careening into the outside wall’s SAFER barrier. The violent impact threw Larson’s car back into the path of Chase Briscoe’s #14 Ford Mustang, which also sustained significant damage. Both drivers were forced to retire from the race.
Kyle Larson faces backlash over Verstappen comments
The crash was particularly shocking given Larson’s status as one of the top drivers in NASCAR. The 2021 Cup Series champion has long been confident in his abilities, once even drawing comparisons between himself and Formula 1’s Max Verstappen. However, the Atlanta crash highlighted the unpredictability of racing and served as a reminder of the fine margins between success and disaster in motorsport.
Reflecting on the crash, Kyle Larson admitted his surprise at how quickly things went wrong: "There was no warning at all. If anything, I was getting tighter and tighter. It just caught me way off guard. I was never once, even in that same corner, loose. It just started stepping out, and I overcorrected."
The early exit marked a severe blow to Larson’s playoff hopes. Despite entering the race with a comfortable 35-point cushion above the elimination line, the 37th-place finish drastically reduced his margin. Now sitting only 15 points above the cut-off, Larson faces an uphill battle to advance to the next round of the playoffs.
