In an unexpected turn of events at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda experienced a massive crash during the Q3 qualifying session. The incident led to a red flag, halting the session momentarily and causing a stir among drivers and fans alike.

As the clock ticked down with just over two minutes remaining in the session, the grid positions were fiercely contested. McLaren’s Lando Norris had just secured a provisional pole, with his teammate Oscar Piastri trailing by less than a tenth of a second, making it a McLaren one-two. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, who was quick on his heels, managed to clock in a time that placed him third.

The drama unfolded when Tsunoda, pushing hard to secure a competitive position, got too wide at turn six. The resulting collision with the wall was significant, bringing his car to an abrupt halt and triggering a red flag. The severity of the crash left the AlphaTauri team and fans holding their breath, but initial reports indicated that Tsunoda was unharmed.

Here is the video:

This unexpected interruption was both a relief and an opportunity for some drivers. Lando Norris, in particular, benefited as his pole position remained intact during the pause. Oscar Piastri also found himself in a favourable position, temporarily holding second place. For others, like Max Verstappen, the red flag meant a chance to regroup and strategize for the final laps once the session resumed.

Can Mercedes get a better qualifying result?

With the red flag period lasting a few minutes, the tension in the pit lane was palpable. Teams quickly prepared their cars for a final attempt to improve their grid positions. As soon as the track was cleared, cars began to emerge from the pit lane, eager to set one final flying lap in the remaining two minutes and thirteen seconds.

At the time of the crash, the top ten standings were as follows: Lando Norris leading, followed by Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, Yuki Tsunoda, and Daniel Ricciardo.
