McLaren driver Lando Norris thrilled fans at the United States Grand Prix Sprint Race with a stunning display of overtaking on lap 1. He rocketed from P4 to P2 in the early stages of the short 19-lap sprint. Norris made a lightning-fast start off the grid, manoeuvring his McLaren past both Ferraris and George Russell’s Mercedes in an impressive feat of skill and precision.

Starting fourth on the grid, Norris had one of his best launches of the season, which has sometimes been inconsistent for him. But this time, the Briton wasted no time, seizing the opportunity to slip into second place right at the start. His McLaren MCL38 performed admirably through the first corner, allowing him to overtake the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, as well as George Russell's Mercedes.

Reflecting on his strong start, Norris expressed his satisfaction, especially given the mixed results he's had off the line this season. "There have been a few races where the starts were bad, but today was a good one. I did the most I could in that first corner," Norris remarked. He acknowledged that while his launch was perfect, the pace of the car wasn’t enough to compete with the likes of Max Verstappen, who was comfortably ahead.

Norris held onto second place for the majority of the race, though Verstappen had already built a commanding lead. However, with just a few laps remaining, Carlos Sainz began closing in. Despite his best efforts, Norris’s front tyres started to give out, leaving him vulnerable to Sainz’s attack. A small lock-up on the last lap allowed Sainz to slip past him, dropping Norris back to third.

“It was a tough one. I thought I could hang onto second, but Carlos did a good job and my front tyres were finished. There wasn’t much I could do,” Norris admitted after the race. Despite losing P2 in the final moments, Norris remained positive about his overall performance, securing valuable points for McLaren.

“I’m happy with how things ended up. Of course, it’s disappointing to lose second, but overall, I’m pleased with the result,” Norris said, noting that McLaren simply didn’t have the same pace as Verstappen’s Red Bull or the Ferraris during the sprint.
