As Mercedes gears up for the Italian Grand Prix, both Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff have voiced their strong comments for rising star Kimi Antonelli. Antonelli, a teenage prodigy, is set to make his Formula 1 debut during the FP1 session on Friday, and the excitement surrounding his potential is palpable.

Hamilton, who will be transitioning to Ferrari in 2025, has been a vocal advocate for Antonelli's promotion. Speaking to the media at Monza, Hamilton praised the young driver, emphasizing his remarkable talent and the promise he holds. “I said a long time ago that I think he was who the team should choose moving forward,” Hamilton remarked.

He noted that Antonelli, at just 18, is a standout talent among his peers. Hamilton reflected on a nostalgic moment, recalling Antonelli's early days as a grid kid in 2018 and now witnessing him prepare to join the grid himself. “It’s like ‘shit, now he’s going to be on the grid’. It reminds you of how old you are, but I’m excited to see his progress.”

Toto Wolff, who has been instrumental in fast-tracking Antonelli into a Formula 2 seat this year, has also highlighted the young driver’s potential. “We’ve been watching him through the different formulas,” Wolff said.

Antonelli has already showcased his skills with a victory in both a sprint and a feature race this season. Wolff’s faith in Antonelli’s abilities is evident, and he believes the fresh perspective the young driver brings could significantly benefit Mercedes' development efforts.

Hamilton echoed this sentiment, noting that giving young drivers like Antonelli an opportunity can be highly beneficial. “In terms of taking on a driver that’s had many years of experience versus allowing a youngster, that’s what happened for me, and it worked out quite well,” Hamilton said.

He sees Antonelli’s forthcoming experience in an F1 car as a crucial chance for growth. “He’s going to get to work with the best in class, learn from people that I’ve worked with, and it’s a great environment for him to nurture in.”

As Antonelli prepares for his first official F1 session, Hamilton anticipates a positive experience. “For Kimi tomorrow it’s just about enjoying himself and having fun,” Hamilton stated. “It’s going to be an experience for him.” With the new car expected to offer a marked improvement over the 2022 model, Antonelli is likely to bring valuable insights and enthusiasm to the team.
