Mclaren came under a lot of firing after they were found to be using a Flexi rear wing at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Ferrari and Red Bull have raised the issue with the FIA the governing body of Formula One to look into the issue.
Now FIA has ordered McLaren to change their controversial Rear wing design. In the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Oscar Piastris's rear board camera has captured footage of his car's rear wing rotating back to open the slot gap which helps in top speed even without the DRS being activated.
FIA finally takes action
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc even with DRS open couldn't catch Oscar piastri and McLaren ended up winning the race. Although the wing fully complies with current regulations and passes all the tests FIA asked the team to change the design so that the upper element won't flex in the straights.
In TD34, FIA clearly states that “Designs whose structural characteristics are altered by the secondary parameters, to produce a different deflection characteristics than when stationary during F1 checks. Examples of secondary practice could be Temperature, aerodynamic load.etc.”
Already teams have raised issues with McLaren's Front wing but at that time FIA declared ‘No action was needed’. But now it took action by asking McLaren to change the Rear wing design so that it won't flex anymore in the straights. If McLaren was given clearance again then other teams would also make use of the flexi design and exploit the FIA regulations. McLaren's rear wing design has helped them to achieve downforce and Top speed in the straights without the need to open the rear wing.
In this season of Formula 1 McLaren and Red Bull are the only teams fighting for championship. McLaren already took the lead in the constructors title after 14 years. Red Bull's Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris are the only two drivers in the championship title race.
