McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has offered insights into the team's recent performance and areas for improvement following the Belgian Grand Prix. Despite Lando Norris finishing sixth Stella emphasized the need for minor adjustments to refine the team's approach.
Reflecting on Norris' performance, Stella acknowledged the driver's disappointment with his opening lap, which had a significant impact on his race. Norris mentioned that he plans to use the summer break to “reset.” However, Stella downplayed the statement suggesting that while a complete reset may not be necessary, there is always room for incremental improvements.
“These kinds of situations are always very, very marginal,” Stella remarked. He explained that Norris’ early race struggles were due to minor distractions and running out of track, indicating that only small adjustments are required to prevent such issues in the future. “Lando got a bit distracted from what was happening on the inside and ran out of track. It’s a marginal thing. It requires little adjustments here and there,” Stella elaborated.
“We can improve individually”, says Stella
Stella highlighted the collaborative efforts between Norris and his teammate, Oscar Piastri, aimed at identifying and capitalizing on improvement opportunities. “We work with Lando, like we work with Oscar, to see all the opportunities in which we can improve individually but also collaborate better to either be more prepared or to use our abilities and talents better,” he stated.
The recent uptick in McLaren's performance has brought them closer to Red Bull in the constructors' championship, narrowing the gap to 42 points. This surge is attributed to the team’s dedication to continuous improvement and their strategic approach to races.
McLaren has secured two Grand Prix victories this season, with Norris and Piastri each clinching a win. Despite being in contention for several other wins, Norris has faced challenges that have prevented him from capitalizing fully. Stella has noticed a trend in Norris’ difficulties, particularly in the early stages of races.
