Max Verstappen's commanding performance during the first practice session (FP1) for the Belgian Grand Prix left his competitors trailing. Demonstrating his exceptional driving skills once again he clocked fastest in FP1.

Despite recent controversies and a collision with Lewis Hamilton at the Hungarian, Verstappen showcased his dominance on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Verstappen, driving the RB20 with the bodywork package from the British Grand Prix, posted the fastest lap time of 1:43.372s on Pirelli's soft tyres.

This impressive feat put him 0.531 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. Notably, Piastri recently secured his maiden F1 victory at the Hungaroring. However, Verstappen's outstanding performance in FP1 comes with a significant challenge for Sunday's race.

Max Verstappen receives a 10-grid penalty!

It was confirmed during the session that Max Verstappen’s car has introduced a new internal combustion engine, marking the first time he has exceeded the four allocated for the season. As a result, Verstappen will face a 10-place grid penalty, adding a layer of complexity to his weekend strategy.

In the current FP1 session, Sergio Perez clocked the seventh-fastest time, nearly a second behind Verstappen. Perez's performance this weekend is crucial as discussions about his future with the team loom over the summer break. His need for a near-perfect weekend is evident, and FP1 results suggest he has work to do to match his teammate's pace.

Alex Albon's impressive performance placed him third on the timesheet, just 0.727 seconds behind Verstappen. The Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secured the fourth and fifth fastest times, respectively, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finishing sixth, 0.934 seconds off Verstappen's pace.
