Star MotoGP rider Marc Marquez opened up and revealed the reason why he didn’t accept Ducati’s initial contract clause. The 31-year-old Spanish racer is set to move to factory Ducati from Gresini next year. However, Ducati initially offered that seat to Pramac’s Jorge Martin but with a condition.

They put up a contractual clause with the offer which goes like this; if Marquez wins this year’s championship, he will be automatically promoted to the official team at Martin’s expense. The 26-year-old rider accepted the terms but Marquez didn’t agree to it.

“It's simple, one reason, and the main one, is that, if you have to earn it on the track, you have to have the same weapons. And now I don't have them. But it's no excuse, I'm showing that I can be competitive.” Marquez was quoted as saying by Crash.

Martin is set to be featured for Aprilia in the 2025 MotoGP rider line-up as a result. However, Marquez said that moving to Pramac wouldn’t be the right decision because it forced Ducati to change their decision to give Martin the official contract next year. Marquez said that athletes don’t have only sports contracts but they are also bound with the sponsors as well which makes it difficult for them to switch conveniently.

“Another thing is that I was very clear that I was not going to change from one satellite team to another. And the third point, athletes not only have sports contracts but there are others with sponsors who have followed me throughout my career and a multinational closes in September for the next two years and cannot wait. It was unfeasible.” Marquez said.
