This year, McLaren is unstoppable, as they are the fastest team on the grid by miles. The only team that is closer to McLaren is the Mercedes F1 team. After nearly two decades, McLaren is having their best season start. Lando Norris won the Australian Grand Prix, and Oscar Piastri won the Chinese Grand Prix. The McLaren duo are expected to be the championship contenders this year as they have the fastest car on the grid.

This is the best driver pair for McLaren since Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in the 2007 season. As people say, history repeats itself, and we expect the two drivers to fight each other sooner or later as the season progresses. But what happened in F1 2007? It was all war between the reigning champion Fernando Alonso and young rookie Lewis Hamilton.

Alonso didn't expect Hamilton to be a championship contender in his debut season. Though Lewis lost the title to Kimi Raikkonen that season, he still emerged as the best driver of his team, McLaren. Alonso and Hamilton had many intense battles that year, with Alonso even stopping Hamilton intentionally during a pit stop.

The 2025 McLaren drivers were also asked whether they were ready to battle each other in the upcoming races. Lando Norris acknowledged the question, and Oscar Piastri intervened and talked about the same kind of intra-team battle during the 2007 F1 season between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

Norris initially said that he didn't watch Formula 1 in 2007. He even asked his teammate what happened during the 2007 season. Piastri replied, Lewis and Fernando, then Norris remembered everything and even joked about holding Piastri during the pitstop like Alonso.

Fernando Alonso lost his world title and never won another F1 championship in his career. But Alonso vs Hamilton was one of the most intense team battles in F1 history, and it was cut short when Fernando left McLaren and joined his old team Renault in 2008. If Alonso had stayed there, we would have seen another Senna-Prost-like team battle in F1.
