James Clark, or Jim Clark, is a two-time Formula 1 world champion and was more an enthusiast than a racing driver. He won races because he enjoyed driving cars and going fast. So, let us look at the legendary driver's achievements and memorable moments in F1.

A car enthusiast turned F1 driver

Clark was interested in Rally racing and hill climbing in his early years. But in 1958, the world changed upside down for him as he was racing for his local team, the Border Reivers. He finished second, next to Colin Chapman, the Lotus founder and impressed everyone. This gave him a spotlight in british racing, and he was given a seat to drive the Lotus car at the 1959 24H LeMans. He was an enthusiast who just wanted to drive the car faster.

F1 career

Jim Clark F1 career

In 1960, Jim Clark made his debut for the Lotus F1 team. In his second race at the Spa Francorchamps, he faced the reality of F1 when two of his fellow drivers, Chris Bristow and Alan Stacy, died. Many F1 drivers, including Jim Clark, hate the Belgium race track forever. But Clark was one kind of driver who didn't make any mistakes, and even during tough circumstances like heavy rain and fog, he brought the car back home safe and sound.

F1 World championships

Clark slowly progressed to higher ranks with his driving skills and race wins. In his 8 years as a Formula 1 driver, Clark achieved the record for most poles, fastest laps, race wins, and Most lap leads. It was beaten only recently by Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. He won the 1963 and 1965 F1 world championships and the Indianapolis 500 cup. If he had been alive today, he would have even won the triple crown (Monaco GP, Indianapolis 500 and 24h LeMans) that hasn't been achieved till now.

Tragic Death

Jim Clark Death

During the 1968 German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring, Clark was racing for the Lotus team and in the fifth lap, he went off the track and crashed into a tree. He suffered a skull damage and broken neck and died on spot. Investigators concluded that it was due to tyre deflation, and it was a huge loss for Formula 1 as a unique racing talent was wasted by death. F1 remembers him on his birthday, and his name will be sculpted in Formula 1's greatest drivers list.
